OVERVIEW
Rib Mountain is the senior film of Taylor Kujawa, a Wisconsin filmmaker with a passion for nature and history. Shot in Central Wisconsin during the summer of 2014 and edited in Minneapolis, MN the following autumn, the film is the result of strong collaboration from many individuals throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. During post-production, sound mixer and music composer Ryan Power was brought on to create an atmospheric soundtrack. LOG LINE
Looming above the sandy valleys of the Rib and Wisconsin rivers sits Rib Mountain, a billion-year-old rib-shaped hill that rewards visitors with its geological beauty and historical significance. Uncovered by erosion in the landscape, Rib Mountain's geological dominance has played a pivotal role in attracting visitors to Central Wisconsin. With the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps and Wausau-area community leaders, Rib Mountain is now protected under the state park system where it is enjoyed for its recreational amenities year-round. PRODUCTION
Taylor Kujawa chose Rib Mountain as the topic for his senior film because of how prominent the landform was for him growing up in Central Wisconsin. Despite how familiar Rib Mountain was to Taylor, much research was conducted so that a well-rounded screenplay could be written. From there, three local experts were contacted to lend their knowledge for on-camera interviews. Around this time, much of the B-roll was shot in and around Rib Mountain State Park. Through the assistance of the Marathon County Historical Society, Taylor obtained numerous archival materials that he later touched up and used in conjunction with the B-roll video. With the addition of Ryan Power as sound mixer and music composer, the two students worked closely together to establish the desired mood and pace for the film. During this time, four motion graphics sequences were created to display certain information in more effective ways. Overall, the film required a wide range of filmic competencies that would not have been achieved without the support of local experts, instructors, family members, and friends. |
